Eye Hospitals in Puducherry
Puducherry is one of the seven union territories of India. It was formerly known as Pondicherry. It is located in the southern part of India. It has four districts and an area of 562 square km. Its total population is 1,244,464 (2011 census). Pondicherry’s official languages are Tamil, English and French. It was a French colony since 1674 but its territories were transferred to India on 1st November 1954 (de facto) and on 16th August 1962 (de jure).
The healthcare facilities in Puducherry are being provided by the department of health and family welfare under the government of Puducherry. The Chief Minister of Puducherry is the head of this department.
There are some top level medical institutes in Puducherry that offer good medical care to its people such as Jawahar Institute of Post-Graduate Education and Research (JIPMER), Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital & Post-Graduate Institute and Institute of Medical Sciences, etc.
The primary healthcare services are being offered through thirty nine Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) and seventy seven Sub-centres. There are four Community Health Centres (CHCs) to offer secondary healthcare facilities. The government general hospitals offer tertiary health services. At present there are eight government general hospitals in Puducherry. In all government general hospitals there are facilities for tele-medicines and ambulance services.
The Department of Health and Family Welfare has launched several health schemes for prevention and cure of tuberculosis (TB), Vector borne diseases control, dental wellness, blindness control and Hansen’s disease control (leprosy).
